Careers + Diversity

Diversity and Inclusion

At SPR, we are committed to hiring, retaining and promoting a diverse group of talented attorneys and staff and fostering an inclusive and welcoming work environment. It is a fundamental policy of the Firm to ensure equal employment opportunity without discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical condition, alienage or citizenship status, creed, marital or partnership status, familial status, caregiver status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by law.  The Firm prohibits and will not tolerate any such discrimination or harassment. We value all colleagues’ viewpoints in substantive work and Firm management decisions.  We emphasize the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for all of our colleagues to thrive.  Our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, composed of attorneys representing a cross-section of the Firm, actively seeks ways to further develop these values within the Firm and the legal profession, particularly the environmental field.

Four of the six most recent internal promotions to principal status within the Firm have been women, and our associate ranks and support staff consist overwhelmingly of women and/or people of color. The Firm actively supports the New York State Bar Association Environmental and Energy Law Section Diversity and Inclusion Committee, of which one of our principals is co-chair; we are an inaugural sponsor of the Environmental Law Institute’s Environmental Justice Clerkship in partnership with Howard University School of Law; and a participant in the New York City Bar Association’s Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program for diverse New York City public high school students.

Lateral Associates

We are interested in qualified professionals who will contribute to the Firm’s success. We believe that a variety of backgrounds and skills contribute to a collaborative environment that best meets the diverse needs of our clients. In addition to top academic and professional credentials, we look for applicants who are hard-working, creative, and able to work independently on a variety of matters.

Our attorneys thrive on the challenging and often cutting-edge environmental matters that we handle. Associates benefit from our small size by working closely with all of our principals and with each other. Associates are exposed to a wide variety of matters within the Firm’s practice areas and take on a great degree of responsibility. Associates also participate in writing, marketing, and recruiting.

Along with a competitive salary, we offer employees a comprehensive benefits package that includes a 401k retirement savings plan, profit sharing, flexible spending accounts for medical and dependent care, and health, dental, and life insurance.

Summer Program

Our summer program attracts exceptional law students from across the country and provides an opportunity to experience the full range of our diverse practice areas. Summer associates are treated like full-time associates and are given the opportunity to work on an assortment of matters with different attorneys throughout the summer. Typical assignments for summer associates may include drafting portions of legal briefs and pleadings; conducting legal research and drafting research memoranda; attending court conferences, oral arguments, and administrative hearings; and writing about environmental law developments for the Firm’s blog. Our emphasis on active learning and full participation gives summer associates the advantage of concrete, practical experience.

A number of social events are also held to provide summer associates with opportunities to become better acquainted with each other, our attorneys, and the community in which we practice.

For more information about our summer program, please contact us at recruiting@sprlaw.com.
